Follicular Unit Extraction

What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is a modern, minimally invasive hair transplant technique that involves extracting individual hair follicles from a donor area-typically the back or sides of the scalp-and transplanting them to areas experiencing hair thinning or baldness. Unlike the traditional "strip" method (FUT), FUE does not require large incisions or stitches, resulting in less scarring and faster recovery. It's a highly effective solution for both men and women seeking natural-looking hair restoration.

When Is FUE Recommended?

FUE may be recommended for individuals experiencing hair loss due to a variety of causes. You may be a good candidate if you have:

  • Male or female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia)
  • Receding hairline or thinning crown
  • Hair loss due to trauma or scarring
  • Desire to restore beard, eyebrow, or body hair
  • Sufficient donor hair on the back or sides of the scalp

How Is FUE Performed?

FUE is typically performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Using a specialized tool, the surgeon extracts individual hair follicles from the donor area. Each follicular unit is then carefully implanted into the thinning or bald areas, following the natural growth pattern for optimal appearance. The procedure can take several hours to complete, depending on the number of grafts being transplanted. Patients are awake and comfortable throughout the process.

What to Expect During Recovery After FUE?

Recovery from FUE is relatively quick. Patients may experience minor redness, swelling, or scabbing at both the donor and recipient sites, which usually subside within a week. Most people can return to work within 2–3 days, and normal physical activity within a week. Transplanted hairs typically fall out within a few weeks (a normal part of the process), and new permanent hair growth begins in 3–4 months, with full results visible by 9–12 months.

What Are the Risks of FUE?

While FUE is a safe and well-tolerated procedure, potential risks may include:

  • Temporary swelling or redness
  • Infection (rare with proper care)
  • Uneven or patchy growth in early stages
  • Follicle damage or low graft survival rate
  • Shock loss (temporary shedding of native hair)

What Are the Benefits of FUE?

FUE offers a number of advantages over traditional hair restoration methods:

  • No linear scarring, ideal for short hairstyles
  • Minimally invasive with quicker healing
  • Natural-looking results tailored to your hairline
  • Reduced post-operative discomfort
  • Permanent, long-lasting hair restoration
