Skin and Hair Care Tips Just for Men

Did you know that men have different skin and hair needs than women? Men tend to have thicker oiler skin, larger pores, and coarse hair due to higher levels of progesterone. With men having a different hormonal makeup, they need specific products to help maintain their skin and hair health. With June being Men’s Health Month, let’s explore some ways to keep men’s skin and hair looking and feeling great from the inside out.

Skincare Tips for Men:

Cleanse Daily: Men produce higher levels of Sebum, a naturally occurring oil that lubricates and protects the skin from friction 1 . Because of this, men typically have oiler skin. Washing your face daily can prevent clogged pores, especially after a workout or working in the sun. Men need to wash their skin with a gentle soap or cleanser that cleanses but doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils.

Exfoliate: Exfoliating your skin helps break up and remove debris that might be hiding in your pores. Exfoliate after cleansing to remove dead skin and cells on the face and body, allowing dirt and oils to be released.

Moisturize: Moisturizing is not just for chicks. Adding a moisturizer to your skincare regimen is an essential element to your daily routine. Moisturizing with a water based moisturizer after cleansing and exfoliating will keep the skin soft, and protect the skin’s barrier. Moisturized skin can help slow down the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin imperfections.

Sun Protection: Did you know that using sunscreen as part of your daily skin care routine is vital for skin health? Most people only think of using a SPF when they are going to be out on the beach. Regular use of a sunscreen can shield men from damaging effects such as sunburns, premature aging, and worst of all, skin cancer.

Men’s hair tends to grow at a faster rate than women’s, with the strands shorter and lacking luster and shine. Check out these hair care tips:

Scalp Care: As men produce more sebum within their skin, it’s also true for the scalp. Sebum (oil) can build up on the scalp trapping in dead skin, dirt, sweat, and residue from products. Scrubbing the scalp daily with quality shampoo can help break up dead skin and oils and promotes scalp health..

Avoid Hot Showers: Steaming hot showers can feel great, but it’s not the best choice for your hair. Hot temperatures quickly strip the hair of natural oils needed to keep your hair looking and feeling soft. Next time you hop in the shower, remember lukewarm water is best for hair health.

Pat or Air Dry: Getting into the habit of pat drying your hair can improve hair health.. With a soft cloth or towel, simply pat the excess water off the hair. Rubbing hard back and forth can cause damage by breaking the hair and giving your hair a rough appearance and texture.

Condition: After shampooing, men should use a conditioner according to their specific hair type. Shampooing can often strip hair of its natural oils, leaving hair looking dry, brittle, and lacking shine.

Men have special skin and hair that requires specific and routine care. With cleansing, exfoliating, protecting, and conditioning, your hair and skin both will look and feel great from the inside out.
